Copolymerization of propylene with acrylate by a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst

Propylene was polymerized by using a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst in the presence of ethylchloroaluminum acrylate, which was formed by the reaction of diethylaluminum chloride with acrylic acid. The polymer obtained contained acrylic units which were proved to be copolymerized with propylene units by solvent extraction, infrared spectrum, and NMR spectrum. The copolymer showed much improved properties compared with the polypropylene homopolymer.     

Synthesis of all diastereomeric methyl 2,5-anhydro-3-deoxy-hexonates: precursors to C-2-deoxynucleosides and THF-templated γ- and δ-amino acids

Efficient syntheses of all diastereomers of methyl 2,5-anhydro-3-deoxy-hexonate from mannono- or gulono-lactones provide precursors for C-nucleosides of 2-deoxyribose and for THF-templated γ- and δ-amino acids.     

Proton magnetic relaxation and ionic conductivity of ammonium hydronium β″-alumina

The protonic motion in NH⁺₄-H⁺(H₂O)_nβ″ -alumina wasstudied by measurements of proton spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times. The results show that two types of NH⁺₄ reorientation, that is, three-fold reorientation about its unique C₃ axis and tumbling motion as a whole, occur below room temperature. Above room temperature a fast proton translational diffusion was apparent, and its activation energy was estimated to be 36 kJ/mol. On the other hand, the conductivity measured on a pressed sample by an ac method is strongly humidity-sensitiveand changes by more than five orders from 0 to 100% relative humidity. The activation energy also may be humidity-sensitive. Its value was 73 kJ/mol for the sample equilibrated at 90°C in a dry nitrogen atmosphere.     

Heating and quenching of metastable superconducting compounds with a plasma jet

Superconducting compounds, such as cubic -MoC_1–x, cubic -WC_1–x, hexagonal MoB₂, and cubic -TaN, which are metastable at room temperature, have been formed by heating and quenching of their respective equilibrium phases, such as hexagonal -MoC_1–x, hexagonal WC, rhombohedral Mo₂B₅, and hexagonal -TaN in a plasma jet. From calculations based on a simple model, the quenching rate of particles has been estimated to be 10⁵ deg s^–1.
